Do Texas Children Need a Diagnosis Before Starting ABA?
For ABA therapy, yes. Insurers require a DSM-5 autism spectrum disorder diagnosis from a licensed physician or psychologist before authorizing services. This is not a clinic policy. No provider in Texas can bill ABA without one.

Behavioral Innovations offers autism testing for children 18 months to 6 years at select Texas centers. That removes the most common delay families hit, which is finding an evaluator and then waiting months for an appointment.
If your child is older than 6, or you prefer to test elsewhere, ask your pediatrician for a referral to a developmental pediatrician, child psychologist, child psychiatrist, or pediatric neurologist. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends autism-specific screening at 18 and 24 months, so you can raise the question early rather than waiting to be asked.
Under the Texas autism insurance mandate, a child must be diagnosed before their 10th birthday to qualify for mandated coverage. There is no upper age limit on treatment once that condition is met. If your child is approaching 10 and you have been putting off an evaluation, that deadline matters more than most families realize.
CDC data released in 2025 identified autism in 1 in 31 eight-year-olds nationally. Texas surveillance sites reported the lowest rate in the country at 14.6 per 1,000, which reflects gaps in identification and access rather than lower prevalence. Children in Texas are being missed, not spared.
