Nancy Scena:  Hi, my name is Nancy Scena. I’m the clinical director and the bcba at the Behavioral Innovation Center in Richardson. When making a decision to potty train, start by observing your child to see when he naturally eliminates. When you have an idea of when those times are bring your child to the bathroom. This will increase the likelihood of success. You might want to consider starting on a weekend or during a break. This will give you the extra time that you need during those first few days.

Consistency is important when starting to potty train. We need to try to stick with it once we start, so try to make sure that both you and your child are ready. It’s really important to make sure that you have the support of everyone that will be involved. You’ll need everyone on the same page so that no one inadvertently undermines your efforts.
