Insurance & coverage

In-Network Providers

Behavioral Innovations is in-network with many of the most widely used insurance plans. We handle the insurance side so you don’t have to. Before your child’s evaluation begins, our team verifies your benefits, confirms your coverage, and walks you through exactly what to expect – no surprises at the end of the process.

Don’t see your insurance listed? We work with many additional carriers beyond those shown. Call us at 855.782.7822 and we’ll verify your benefits – usually within one business day.

Early Signs of Autism By Age

Every child develops differently, and no single sign confirms an autism diagnosis. But if several of these patterns feel familiar – especially across more than one age group – an autism evaluation is worth pursuing. Research consistently shows that earlier diagnosis leads to better long-term outcomes.

Infants (0-1 year)

  • Lack of eye contact
  • Not responding to name
  • Limited facial expressions
  • Not imitating sounds or movements

Toddlers (1-2 years)

  • Delayed speech or no babbling
  • Limited gestures (e.g., pointing, waving)
  • Difficulty playing with others
  • Repetitive actions like spinning

Preschool (3-4 years)

  • Difficulty with social interactions
  • Repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand flapping)
  • Echolalia (repeating words/phrases)
  • Inconsistent responses to sounds
  • Difficulty with pretend play

School-Age (4-6 years)

  • Trouble understanding social cues
  • Intense focus on specific topics
  • Sensitivity to sensory stimuli
  • Struggles with changes in routine
  • Difficulty making friends

The process

How does our autism evaluation process work?

From your first call to the final report, most evaluations take 2 to 4 weeks. Every step is led by a licensed psychologist and explained in plain language.

1. Initial consultation We start by listening. Your child’s story matters before any assessment begins — we review your concerns, developmental history, and any records from your pediatrician or school.

2. Structured observation & clinical testing Your child participates in age-appropriate activities while our clinicians observe and conduct gold-standard assessments (ADOS-2, ADI-R, CARS). Designed to feel comfortable and low-pressure for your child.

3. Plain-language results We don’t hand you a report and send you home. We sit down, walk you through what we found, and explain what it means for your child — and what it doesn’t.

4. Written report & next steps You receive a formal written report — accepted by insurers, school districts, and therapy providers — along with specific recommendations for what to do next, whether that’s ABA, speech, school accommodations, or something else.

Autism Testing Tools

How do we Screen for Autism?

At Behavioral Innovations, we use many diagnosis tools at our autism diagnosis center to help you understand your child’s needs. We walk with you, support you and help you navigate the process.

  1. Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT™): The M-CHAT is appropriate for children under 3. It is a parent-report screening tool that assesses the risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). With the M-CHAT, the parent completes a 20-question questionnaire and receives an autism risk assessment for their kid.
  2. Childhood Asperger’s Syndrome Test (CAST): If you suspect your child has autism, it is crucial to take them for an autism test. This parent-completed questionnaire captures various social, communicative, and imaginative behaviors in children aged 4 and older.

Take the CAST

An autism diagnosis will help you understand the challenges your child is having at school and home. You can get the initial autism screening from your pediatrician, or our team can perform a full autism evaluation.

Who conducts the evaluation

Licensed psychologists. Real expertise. Real care.

Every autism evaluation at Behavioral Innovations is conducted and overseen by doctoral-level licensed psychologists – not general practitioners, not paraprofessionals. Each diagnostic report is reviewed for clinical accuracy before it reaches you. These are the people responsible for getting your child’s evaluation right.

FAQs About Our Diagnostic Services

To prepare for your child’s diagnostic evaluation, please review these common questions and answers:

Our autism diagnostic services are currently offered in Texas and Colorado. In Texas, evaluations are available across our Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio metro locations. In Colorado, evaluations are available in the Denver metro area. Both in-person and virtual assessment options are available depending on your location and your child’s needs. Call us and we’ll match you with the nearest option.

The full autism evaluation process at Behavioral Innovations typically spans two to four weeks from your initial consultation to receiving your written report. The assessment itself — observation and clinical testing — is usually completed across one to two appointments depending on your child’s age and needs. We move as efficiently as possible so your child can access support sooner.

Behavioral Innovations is in-network with many major insurance plans. For most families, the autism evaluation is covered by insurance, meaning little to no out-of-pocket cost. Coverage varies by plan and state, so we verify your specific benefits before your child’s first appointment. Call us at 855.782.7822 and we can typically confirm your coverage within one business day.

We use the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition), the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised), and the CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale), among other evidence-based instruments. The ADOS-2 in particular is widely regarded as the gold standard in autism diagnostic assessment for children. These tools give us an accurate, comprehensive picture of your child’s profile.

We won’t hand you a report and send you home. Our team walks you through what the diagnosis means, what it doesn’t mean, and what the evidence says about next steps. If ABA therapy is the right path, we can begin that process at BI — with no separate intake, no new waitlist, and a clinical team that already knows your child.

With early, evidence-based intervention — particularly ABA therapy — many children with autism make significant, measurable progress in communication, behavior, independence, and social skills. The earlier support begins, the better the outcomes tend to be. Autism is a lifelong condition, but what a child’s life looks like with the right support can be profoundly different from what it looks like without it.
