Early Signs of Autism By Age
Every child develops differently, and no single sign confirms an autism diagnosis. But if several of these patterns feel familiar – especially across more than one age group – an autism evaluation is worth pursuing. Research consistently shows that earlier diagnosis leads to better long-term outcomes.
Infants (0-1 year)
- Lack of eye contact
- Not responding to name
- Limited facial expressions
- Not imitating sounds or movements
Toddlers (1-2 years)
- Delayed speech or no babbling
- Limited gestures (e.g., pointing, waving)
- Difficulty playing with others
- Repetitive actions like spinning
Preschool (3-4 years)
- Difficulty with social interactions
- Repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand flapping)
- Echolalia (repeating words/phrases)
- Inconsistent responses to sounds
- Difficulty with pretend play
School-Age (4-6 years)
- Trouble understanding social cues
- Intense focus on specific topics
- Sensitivity to sensory stimuli
- Struggles with changes in routine
- Difficulty making friends
The process
How does our autism evaluation process work?
From your first call to the final report, most evaluations take 2 to 4 weeks. Every step is led by a licensed psychologist and explained in plain language.
1. Initial consultation We start by listening. Your child’s story matters before any assessment begins — we review your concerns, developmental history, and any records from your pediatrician or school.
2. Structured observation & clinical testing Your child participates in age-appropriate activities while our clinicians observe and conduct gold-standard assessments (ADOS-2, ADI-R, CARS). Designed to feel comfortable and low-pressure for your child.
3. Plain-language results We don’t hand you a report and send you home. We sit down, walk you through what we found, and explain what it means for your child — and what it doesn’t.
4. Written report & next steps You receive a formal written report — accepted by insurers, school districts, and therapy providers — along with specific recommendations for what to do next, whether that’s ABA, speech, school accommodations, or something else.

Autism Testing Tools
How do we Screen for Autism?
At Behavioral Innovations, we use many diagnosis tools at our autism diagnosis center to help you understand your child’s needs. We walk with you, support you and help you navigate the process.
- Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT™): The M-CHAT is appropriate for children under 3. It is a parent-report screening tool that assesses the risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). With the M-CHAT, the parent completes a 20-question questionnaire and receives an autism risk assessment for their kid.
- Childhood Asperger’s Syndrome Test (CAST): If you suspect your child has autism, it is crucial to take them for an autism test. This parent-completed questionnaire captures various social, communicative, and imaginative behaviors in children aged 4 and older.
An autism diagnosis will help you understand the challenges your child is having at school and home. You can get the initial autism screening from your pediatrician, or our team can perform a full autism evaluation.
In-Network Insurance Plans
We accept most major insurance plans for ABA therapy services in Texas & Colorado. If you are unable to find your provider here, contact our team and we can verify your plan.
