At Behavioral Innovations, we are dedicated to continuously improving the care we provide by fostering collaboration among our clinicians. One of the key ways we do this is through our Communities of Practice (COPs), which bring together team members to explore important topics in clinical care. Recently, Lee Vandertulip and Cristina Vanarsdall, leader of the Assent COP, hosted a panel discussion focused on the critical topic of client assent.

What is Client Assent?

Client assent refers to the process by which a client, particularly a child or an individual with limited decision-making capacity, is given the opportunity to express their willingness to participate in therapy, education, or medical treatment. This is particularly important in ABA therapy, where the client’s active participation is essential for meaningful progress. Respecting client assent not only ensures cooperation but also empowers individuals, making them feel more in control of their own therapeutic journey.

Honoring the Client’s Voice

The panel discussion provided our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) with valuable insights into how to respect and honor a child’s voice from the very beginning of care. From the initial assessment to ongoing sessions, our BCBAs are learning how to involve clients in their treatment in a way that is empowering and respectful. This includes incorporating client assent into family sessions and ensuring it plays a role in staff training. As Lee Vandertulip shared during the panel, “Through these ongoing conversations, we are continuously refining our practices to provide the best possible care for our clients.”

Creating Safe Spaces for Clients

Given Behavioral Innovations’ experience working with clients who may have experienced trauma, the panel also addressed the importance of creating a “safe place” for every child in our care. Our team is committed to maintaining an environment where children feel comfortable and respected, making it easier for them to actively participate in their treatment. Ensuring that children feel safe and supported is central to our mission of delivering the highest quality of care.

Maintaining Health and Safety

Another key focus of the discussion was how BCBAs can balance client assent with health and safety guidelines. While ensuring a child’s participation is important, it must always be done with their safety in mind. This balance ensures that treatment remains effective while keeping the child’s well-being at the forefront.
