The Importance of Parent Training in ABA Therapy

The Importance of Parent Training in ABA Therapy

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is an evidence-based treatment that focuses on increasing appropriate behaviors and decreasing and/or replacing inappropriate behaviors. At Behavioral Innovations, we apply ABA to working with children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In ABA therapy, family and caregivers work together with a trained team of professionals to help their child learn skills related to communication, play, social, self-help, and other important areas to support their child’s independence, confidence, and growth.

Focus on Behavior

ABA therapy focuses on a understanding a child’s behavior and how their environment impacts that behavior. Once we understand what the behavior looks like and why it is happening, it allows us to change the environment to support learning – something that everyone in a child’s life can do.
Here is a common scenario you may recognize:

  • After a long day of work, you pick up your child and run to the grocery store.
  • Your child asks for a candy bar, but you say no – it’s almost dinner time.
  • Your child begins crying and screaming, and other customers are staring at you.
  • You purchase the candy bar and give it to your child so they stop crying and screaming.

This is a relatable situation most of us have been in! However, in this example, the child has now learned that crying and screaming is more likely to get them a candy bar. Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and trained ABA therapists work to help parents recognize behavioral patterns that contribute to inappropriate behaviors and how to change the environments to support appropriate behaviors.

Parent Participation is Essential

Parent involvement and training is an essential part of ABA therapy. When parents are active participants in their child’s treatment, the child is more likely to be successful. Parent training helps your child generalize their skills – taking the skills they are learning in the therapy center to their home, school, and community. During parent training sessions, we focus on providing you with knowledge on behavioral concepts, and strategies to maximize your child’s success and improve the quality of life. These sessions are customized to meet the needs of your family and child – we work together to help you work with your child on things such as communication, self help skills (like getting dressed and potty training), and social skills.

At Behavioral Innnovations, parents are involved in every aspect of therapy. When it comes to your child, you are the expert! We can’t succeed – and neither can your child – without your support and involvement. We look forward to working with you in the future!
